Weekly Music Roundup: Three New Collaborations and Varo

The NY composer, sound artist, and songwriter Sxip Shirey has teamed up with the Grammy- and Macarthur-winning singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Rhiannon Giddens to release a song called “All Babies Must Cry.” Shirey wrote the song many years ago as a simple folk song, and as a response to the legend that the baby Jesus never cried. But when he saw immigrant children being separated from their parents at the US/Mexico border, his song took on an added layer of meaning. So he enlisted Rhiannon Giddens, who among many other things now hosts the Aria Code podcast produced here at New York Public Radio, to sing the song, while he accompanied on guitar. The song and its video aim to raise funds for RAICES, the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services. Donations accepted HERE.
